Analysis of magazine cover
When I look at this copy of Empire I get the idea that it is aimed at an audience of around the ages of 18-26, I think this because of the use font and graphic design of the magazine. For instance the messy handwriting font coloured in pink is quit bright and in your face it also is made to look as if it is graffiti, this would suggest the magazine is aimed towards a more youthful energetic audience because graffiti is normally an art that represents young rebellious youths, also the masthead in terms of shape, is very sharp, bold and also curved, which portrays both femininity and masculinity so the magazine comes across as aimed at mixed gendered audiences. When I look at the composition of the magazine cover it seems to be quit messy but in a decent arrangement, so it is still attractive. It almost creates an exciting feel which would be very appealing to the target audience. From looking at the quality of the magazine and also the composition I would say the price of the magazine would not be so cheap but also not overly expensive, this would be because the composition of the magazine is professional but arranged in a more gossip magazine manner. This means the target audience would not exactly be very wealthy but would earn a decent pay. The colours of Empire magazine is a mixture of very mature colours such as the royal red masthead, and some more childish and playful colours, like the pink and bright blue fonts, the use of blue and pink might also be a way of attracting female and male audiences so it is not too girly or masculine. Using a mixture of colours on the cover gives it more of a gossip mag look, but because of the use of composition and image it maintains a more professional look, which is more attractive to the audience. The image of the cover is of a long shot of the main subject of the magazine, this may drew in the target audience because of the use of lighting in the picture, it’s not so bright but it is very dramatic and also the low angle of the image again enhances the impact of the cover. I have also noticed that the image overlaps the masthead, this again creates a dramatic look, which the target audience will find appealing because there interests lies in movies. When you look to the top of the cover the sell line says ‘The world’s biggest movie magazine’ which is a large give away as to the subject of the magazine, but also when you look to the right hand side of the cover it is highlighted with white and blue font of the content of the magazine, this has a gossip look about it, it is used this way because the target audience is only interested in the gossip of all the latest movies, so having it in this form of layout shows the viewer all the different new movie subject and gives away elements of the stories to attract there audiences to buy and read there magazine. From really looking at this cover you would think the target audience were quit mature, from looking at the type of imaged used and the masthead, they are both mature but most appealing to a younger audience. The whole vibe of the cover makes me think that this magazine was intended to be for young students at or just left university /college, and some older audiences that are interested in this type of entertainment. The type of person to get this magazine would obviously love to know about movie entertainment, but also maybe like having a social life discussing and going out to see new movies. It is also good for people that are interested in creating film them selves, the way the cover supplies a range of different film related subjects. Because this issue cover displays an image to do with a particular movie genre it would most likely attract people who are most interested in this type of movie, but by adding different subjects around the image it gives other options for the audience to choose upon. But we can see that are audience may be more interested in crime related subjects due to the main image featured.
